ITALIAN CHRISTMAS

Pastoral Music from the Boot-looking Land

Zavateri – Leonarda – Manfredini – A. Scarlatti – Corelli

Maria Ladurner, soprano
Finnish Baroque Orchestra

Pastoral music is an integral part of the Italian Christmas tradition. Its hallmarks are the sweet sound of bagpipes and reed blowers and the swaying, three-part melody. The shepherds - in Italian pastori - made music in their fields, and during Christmas they came to play in the villages and towns to the cribs. During the Baroque period, elements of folklore were transferred to art music, and thus these choruses of pastoral music are heard in countless works related to Christmas.

In its concert, the Finnish Baroque Orchestra celebrates the birth in an Italian atmosphere, and the programme includes Christmas music by both familiar and unfamiliar Baroque composers.
